The final production of Grenfell's graduating bachelor of fine arts students will feature the work of theatre students from the other side of the world.

Beginning January 2018, three students from Deakin University's Melbourne, Australia campus will be participating in an exchange opportunity at both our Harlow and Grenfell campuses.

During the winter 2017 semester two students from Deakin joined our fourth-year theatre students during their course work at Harlow campus in the United Kingdom. While in Harlow, Deakin students worked with Grenfell students on their graduating theatre production. Following the six-week stint, Grenfell students returned to Corner Brook where they further worked on the production and delivered it in April.

While the time in Harlow was beneficial to all students, Deakin students were disadvantaged as they were not able to see through the final production due to having to return to Australia for the start of their semester, said Nicole Watson,  Grenfell's co-ordinator, international programming.

Ms. Watson recently visited Melbourne where she met with faculty at Deakin University. Together, they established a program that built on the successes of the previous year's program.

This year's winter semester will begin the same as the 2017's but, for the first time, three bachelor of arts (drama) program students from Deakin will spend six weeks on our Harlow campus then come to Corner Brook for the semester's remaining six weeks. While in Harlow, they will work on the final production, take in theatre productions and be part of master classes. When they return, they will study, rehearse and deliver the play in our Fine Arts theatre to a Corner Brook audience.

"This new program will allow for one acting and two technical theatre students to spend some time here in Newfoundland and be part of the final production," said Ms. Watson. "They will see the project to fruition, which will increase the value and impact of the experience."

And having spent the six weeks in Harlow will allow for the Australian students to form friendships with the Grenfell students. It is Ms. Watson's hope that this will help ease the transition of the exchange students from a hot Australian summer to a cold, snowy Newfoundland winter.
